Office Chair Design Research Based on Universalization

Product design, with the characteristics of multi-role participation, multi-disciplinary cross-over, multi-problem solving, multi-process interaction, is full of possibilities itself. Universality and systematization are not obstacles for the development of product design. Instead, they are critical prerequisites. This thesis project comes from the UE office chair design center, aimed at addressing the conflict between individual needs and systematic management and achieving a uniform and effective way in order to improve product competitiveness.

This thesis conducts analysis and research on design and development of office chair with emphasis on standardization and proposes systematic modular ideas for office chair design in order to achieve universal composition and serial management. A detailed analysis on the common ground of office chair design process is performed. Design methodology and system are constructed based on universality and systematization.

This study is mainly based on the conflict between consumer’s individual needs and industrial standardized production and management in the context of modern society. Functions, shapes, materials, production process, ways of assembly and disassembly of office chair and studied systematically. According to in-depth analysis of product design, the blueprint of enterprises’ systematic management is improved by universal office chair design, making design methods based on universality principles and strategies become the core competitiveness of enterprises.

Originating from the perspective of design universalization, through the research and development of UE office chair design projects as well as the sorting and planning of existing products of UE, unique design management ideas focusing on universality and systematization are preliminarily formed in theory. These ideas, with a high theoretical and practical value, can effectively improve the production and management efficiency.
